Oreo cookie: Should You Eat It?

If you love biscuits, then you will definitely know Oreo, the most popular cookies in the world with more than 100 years of history [1]. Oreo is so addictive, that in one study found that Oreo is more addictive than cocaine and heroin [2], something that explains their sales [3]. Let’s see if it’s also healthy as it’s tasty.

Oreo cookies contain the following ingredients [4]: Sugar, enriched flour, canola and/or palm oil, cocoa, high fructose corn syrup, leavening (a type of yeast with baking soda and/or calcium phosphate), corn starch, salt, soy lecithin, vanillin.

Three cookies have 160 calories, 7 grams of fat (2 grams saturated) and 25 grams of carbohydrates.

The ingredients of Oreo cookies are all one by one. For example, corn syrup is sweeter than sugar and at the same time more addictive [5], while many experts emphasize that consumption of HFCS should be avoided because it causes obesity [6, 7], insulin resistance and diabetes [8, 9].

Lecithin is used as a food additive, and in particular as a natural emulsifier (E322), because it prevents the separation of certain ingredients in food. The problem is that 93% of soy comes from genetically modified crops [10]. Research has linked genetically modified soy with allergies, toxicity and other health problems [11].

Vanillin is used as a flavoring in confectionery instead of natural vanilla because, due to its industrialized production, it has an extremely lower value than natural vanilla [12]. It has no nutritional value but can cause allergies and migraines in sensitive individuals [13, 14].

Tricalcium phosphate is an additive and is used in powdered spices as an anti-caking agent, e.g. to prevent table salt from caking (E341) [15]. Investigations have been found to cause damage to blood vessels [16].

Oreo contains palm oil. You may remember the ‘craziness’ about the palm oil contained in Nutella (yeah, Nutella is not the only product with palm oil) [17]. Palm oil causes insulin resistance and obesity [18, 19].

Lastly, canola oil, also a genetically modified product, can cause problems in the kidneys and liver [20], heart problems [21, 22], as well as hypertension [23, 24].

As you can see, most ingredients in Oreo cookies promoting obesity while causing insulin resistance and diabetes. So it is good to avoid Oreo cookies, if you have insulin resistance, diabetes or you are obese.
